Can't help but imagine that in the Lucky Clover AU, if Frisk were to manage to sneak away and end up befriending Undyne and the skelebros whilst everyone in the Dunes is probably having a panic attack (maybe Flowey caused a distraction or something, like some scaffolding collapsing causing everyone to focus on figuring out how that happened, giving Frisk the ability to sneak away), by the time Martlet finds them they've already managed to make the Underground a bit safer for at least themself.

Doesn't stop them from being grounded though-

That's exactly the plot set up I had in mind for this AU!

Even though Frisk is under very strict rules by Clover to not leave the Dunes without them, Frisk is constantly wandering off (perhaps influenced by a certain someone...) and exploring the other parts of the Underground. This is how Frisk eventually meets Papyrus, Sans, Undyne, Alphys, and others! And yes, Frisk is always grounded by Clover once they're eventually found and brought home. Doesn't stop them from sneaking out again, though. Clover is getting a taste of their own medicine trying to control this kid LOL.

10,000 kudos feels like such a ridiculous milestone that I don’t really know what to do with myself.

Except to say thank you to all the people who have been reading, responding and in general being colossally wonderful to me.

I initially started writing Don’t think about it because I loved the existing crossovers but wanted to read something where Harry was less traumatised or had at least processed more and I wasn’t sure I was ever going to post it. And then I hit 40k and decided that I might as well.

I was genuinely shocked by the reception. I was sending my best mate message after message getting excited about how many people were already reading at chapter 1.

I know there’s a lot of commentary on the responsibility of readers to leave comments and I am firmly of the opinion that readers should be allowed to interact as much or as little with a fic as they feel like. I am a born lurker and generally don’t post much on social media (tumblr has been a learning curve) and I have probably only commented on the tiniest fraction of fics.

I didn’t even realise I could leave kudos until I was embarrassingly deep into fandom and only started regularly bookmarking last year (all the johnlock and Merlin fics I will never find again haunt me).

But dear god, you every chapter stanleys are the lifeblood. I’ve never finished a piece of writing in my life but with the power of endorphin rushes and knowing that people were waiting for me to update… just thank you, thank you so much.

I have been leaning into fanfic for a long time to distract me when my life gets shit or my mental health goes down the toilet and I definitely still do that (looking at you teen wolf, Jan/Feb was a disaster) but converting some of that addiction into writing has been such a game changer.

Writing fanfic has turned into such a blessing for me in so many ways and I am unbelievably proud of my first completed fic. I’d like to think I would still be proud of it if it hadn’t had such a positive reception but I’m honest enough with myself to know that I likely would have run out of steam on my own.

I’m incredibly lucky to have this and endlessly overjoyed that I get to write all of these cool and terrible ideas I have and have some of you actually read them.

So I’m going to keep writing and updating and throwing my terrible sense of humour at you all.

I don't think I'll ever be a proper Content Creator because of the way my brain works, but my biggest goal is to somehow make a story that makes someone so mentally ill about a thing that they can't think straight. As I do. Every couple weeks or so. Someday it will happen and I will do skitter around dancing and cheering wildly on the subway platform in my brain

You ever notice how your side akways has the same arguments that you keep repeating over and over again like that will bring your baby boy back to the show. There was a helicopter chase, they slept together once, they still loooove each other, boo hoo. Keep being pressed about all this little stuff knowing it will never compete with a relationship they have invested 7 years in! We get new proof every other episode while that man hasn't even been seen in a long time

My dear, your statement has so many holes I could use it to strain my evening tea. And let me tell you how fucking weird it is that you guys show up like clockwork every single time I make a post. Do you just camp under the tag? And if so, is this really the best you could do?

I'm not going to waste my time arguing against every little thing you said but let me tell you something really fun about this post-truth world we are living in - the bullshit is always going to be more appealing and manipulative and persuasive than the truth. We can only say they were in a relationship, they aren't now but there's a fair chance they might get together again. On the other hand, you can say they met! and they fought! and they looked! and they touched! and they stood in a kitchen and they sat on a couch and you can spin a web of lies to drag people in. But don't think we can't do that. I and a lot of the people in this fandom (because believe me when I tell you, there are some really smart people here) could sit down and churn out the most gut-wrenching tale of fate and missed opportunities and throw it at everyone and invade every fandoms space and we would have people believing BuckTommy were meant to be since the pilot episode like it's the word of god. I assure you our fandom would double, or triple in no time. Instead, however, like the sane people we are, we just shrug everything off as a happy coincidence, stick to facts, mark our theories as just theories and keep our stories limited to fanfiction. And I know there are a lot of people on your side who do exactly that and are good people and are really fun to interact with. Try to be more like them.

Not really? Most adults (in my experience) know the 'don't like don't read' rule and know basic online etiquette. I've gotten some for discontinuing a fic or switching fandoms though

I don't write or draw NSFW! I like to make some suggestive themes sometimes, but I'm a very ace person, it's not something I do often. (I do have a current running goal that if my friend reaches their donation goal for their medical bills that I would give NSFW a shot, but again its not really my cup of tea)

10 – Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?

Nah I haven't written any cross overs, but I do draw them sometimes. Recently I've been spinning a Alice in Wonderland x COTL crossover in my head.

11 – Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Yep. I've had people copy and paste my work, go in with a thesaurus to change a few words (like changing 'angry' to mad, 'upset' to 'sad', and so forth) to try and avoid detection and re-posted my written work under a different title name. AO3 staff took them down for violating their policy against plagiarism though

12 – Have you ever had a fic translated?

No. I wouldn't mind it so as long as I'm asked before hand, though not on anon so I can actually work with the person to prevent any mistranslations or mishandling, and that I don't want my work posted to other websites

I think I did when I was a teen but I cannot remember now

Eh I don't have any favorites, just ones I really focus on for a long while

I've done it before but only minor, had a friend help me with it (one or two lines of dialogue) Aside from that, I'm not comfortably fluent enough in anything to do it again without assistance

2024 fandom review!

lets pretend we're not almost two weeks into the new year ok? and what a year it has been. holy shit.

~ Fics written ~

I'll be honest I did go a little batshit crazy this past year. 314k words across 19 published works, plus god knows how much more unpublished on tumblr. listen, I was deep in the ??? phase of my master's (still am, lets be honest) and desperately looking for a new creative outlet. I've always been a writer, always loved dreaming up stories, but I have never quite connected to a universe as much as I have to this one. I resonate with so many of the characters, and i just feel like there is so much room to play and explore. i will continue to add in old people OCs to my fics wherever and whenever i get the chance.

First fic: for the tree's sake (M, 48k) aka tree boys inspired by the trip that eventually led to my discover of young royals in late '23, and my darling baby. yes, that airplane ride that seems weird and random is based on truth!

Fav fic: just if for a minute (T, 53k) aka fake married idiots i greatly enjoyed making Wille suffer for just under 53k. that confrontation scene took days off my life and yet i am so proud of how it turned out.

Honorary mention to Growing towards the light, which was a dream to work on and create with my dear sweet friend Lia. there is one braincell between the two of us and it's full of nature facts and dick jokes. and beautiful stories about getting lost in the wilderness and finding yourself along the way. and tent-dick jokes.

Last fic: Wille på Hyllan (T, 13k) aka christmas shenanigans! another collab with my dearest friends which was hilarious to write and so silly and imo an example of one of the greatest perks of being in a fandom: meeting some of the most incredible people ever. also, dick-lights and dick-tomtar and dick-cookies. what more could you want?

if i tried to go through my history and tell you how many fics i read this year i would never make this post. i'd be here counting and trying to copy links forever. i read hundreds of fics. i enjoyed all of them, thoroughly. i got a lot better at leaving comments (sometimes). i was consistently and repeatedly blown away by the genius brains we have in this little Swedish corner of the internet.

and oh boy who can forget about Kinktober from wax kinks in 17th century Italy to desperate love confession in the middle of wildfires to... whatever that was in the confessional (idk, that's between them and God).

I like "self-aware au" in love and in any fandom. I can sit and look at this tag for hours sometimes. Since I’m in enough fandoms, I can come up with something. And this post is about something specific. "Self-aware au crk", to put it simply "cookie run kingdom! self aware au"

In this au I want to talk about my vision of Our Dear Player (that is, how they see you). First of all, they know you're not a Witch, but you're not a cookie either. You are something else... You are the Creator of this beautiful world (the words of one nun). That's why they call you "Baker".

Although you have many different names, this is the name most often used throughout the kingdoms. Also, depending on the region, you can be the God of Wealth, the God of War, the God of Everything, and so on (everything your imagination can come up with)

Also, many regions disagree on how you appeared, how you created everything and, in principle, what you are.

Some people think that you are a dragon, others that you are a foreign creature, others simply don’t know what you look like, even roughly. There are many writings about you, some completely new, only published by the church, and others that are so old that they will crumble into dust very soon.

Why are so many people acting like OP kicked their cat??? This is a complaint blog and frankly, they made a fairly common complaint and even went out of their way to word it nicely?? They literally said (paraphrased) "i love y'all, but if you make these few changes I'll love you more"?? Y'all are acting like they called fanwriters who make these little formatting and grammar mistakes the r-slur or something equally as degenerate and are whinily demanding fanwriters improve or they don't deserve to post.

And I'm saying this as a fanwriter! Yes, fic is free, and fic readers need to accept that because this is a hobbist field they aren't entitled to or should even expect big publisher quality and they shouldn't be giving unwanted criticism directly to fanwriters either, but also, people are allowed to be annoyed with common formatting and grammar mistakes? And they're allowed to voice those complaints on an easily avoidable complaint blog where fic writers can avoid seeing those complaints? You know you can unfollow this blog if that's going to give you an aneurysm, right? No one is holding a gun to your head to make you stay here.

Hell, even I get annoyed with my fellow fanwriters pretty often because sometimes these littles mistakes are so frequent and make reading difficult at worse and tediously annoying at best. It's not big evil person sin to be dissatisfied with free shit, it's just human nature. Humans are always going to want the biggest, shiniest rock even if they have plenty of other smaller, less shiny but still pretty rocks to choose from. As long as people keep their complaints about free shit locked behind the propper tags and blogs, like OP did, so the creators of the free shit can avoid those complaints if they want, they're not being bad or even really rude for that matter.

Y'all, get thicker skin. My god. I honestly think some of you are just addicted to getting angry with how often I see some of y'all attacking submitters in the notes and ask box.

My fic year in review

Total number of completed stories: 6

Total word count: about 90 k, give or take. (Published, that is, you don't want to see my WIP graveyard...)

Fandoms written in: BBC Sherlock

Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you’d expected? More, because I didn't expect to turn Nothing Gold Can Stay into a series, and three of my six finished fics were in that series. Also, I participated in the May challenge even though it was hell at work around that time, so I'm doubly proud that I produced 28k worth of ficlets.

What’s your own favorite story of the year? Hm, it's a tie between Lying in Winter, because I wrote it in two days in sort of a dreamy haze between New Year's and going back to work and it was lovely, and Guess Who's Coming to Christmas Dinner because it was a hoot to write from start to finish.

Did you take any writing risks this year? I wrote a series of fics that build on each other, which I've learned leads to diminishing returns the more fics into the series you are, but I'll continue this until I run out of ideas or every last one of you is sick of that series, whatever happens first ;-)

Do you have any fanfic or profic goals for the new year? I've recently started working on a big, gigantic monster of a Mystery Project, lovingly nicknamed The Monster(TM). I'd love to stick with this one and finish it, because I think it could be really good. So keep your fingers crossed for me. I also want to finish and post the next fic in the Nothing Gold series.

Most popular story of the year? Guess Who's Coming for Christmas Dinner, you guys apparently love my Unilock fake relationship dorks.

Story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion: See above, if you write a series, the individual stories will have diminishing return because you lose the casuals. But what you lose in quanitity, you win in quality ;-)

Most fun story to write: Guess Who's Coming for Christmas Dinner. I had so much fun with their banter, it was almost indecent. It's also super low stakes, and I needed that at the time.

Most unintentionally telling story: I honestly don't know this year. How fucking long it took me to come up with a good solution for the plot of the new Nothing Gold fic, in that it tells me I suck at plot?

Seriously, The Light Gets In is about the healing powers of time, forgiveness and Yoga, and that's something I've experienced myself. I love Yoga and I think it shows in this fic.

Biggest disappointment: Oh my god, you guys, you cannot imagine how many abandoned drafts titled Yoga Sherlock I have in my WIP folder. It's embarrassing if I tell you how many fics I started, made decent progress with, and abandoned because they just weren't right. And then I went back to my original idea to make it a post Reichenbach story... Sigh. Only I switched to John POV and BAM. I had my story. The classic embodiment of the German saying "Warum einfach wenn's umständlich auch geht", which means basically why do something easy when you can do something complicated.

Biggest surprise: That you guys continue to like my fics. Seriously, the kindness, generosity and welcoming spirit of this fandom shouldn't surprise me anymore, but it gives me great joy. The fic exchange in May and the fic club were such highlights this year, an outpouring of fandom generosity and creativity. So my highlight this year is you, Sherlock fandom.

Spoilers for Warhammer Fulgrim Lore.

I think the husbandry fandom has missed a profound opportunity for some juicy conflict!

So we have some general agreed upon notions for how certain legions react to Husbandry Terra. Now obviously not all of a single space marine type behave the same way but there be trends.

Salamanders, Ultramarines, Blood Angels, Thousand Sons, Space Wolves, Imperial Fists: these groups generally accept bonds and human companionship as they had decent human contact in their original timeline.

Then you've got the grumps who love the attention but getting them to admit it is like Pulling Teeth: Night Lords, Iron Hands and Iron Warriors.

But we have been missing out! On a delightfully painful side of our favorite premadonnas. The Emperor's Children.

Now they and their sire Fulgrim are often stereotyped as such. Elegant, pompous, snooty and post heresy they go completely mask off a drive full into unbound freak territory.

But their story is much more tragic than a spoiled brat leading other spoiled brats into serving the God of overdoing things.

Fulgrim isn't spoken of as much in terms of being screwed over, but looking closer he really was.

Shot to an awful industrial planet where he watched his adopted family struggle to feed him let alone themselves. It would give anybody a complex.

Needing to be useful, needing to contribute, needing to not be a burden.

And once the The Big E showed up it didn't get much better.

His sons? Suffer a geneflaw that gives them astarte cancer. He not only loses many of them, but has to make due with what he has left. Meaning no matter how well trained, he just can't conquer planets at the rate dear old dad wants him to.

His brothers? Got there own issues and probably don't take Fulgrim's struggles seriously. He's just at that spot of "Wow that sucks," and "But the others have it worse.' He probably doesn't feel like he can talk deeply to anyone.

So Fulgrim does what many unloved children do, in fact he does the same thing as Perturabo, Pushes Himself to The Breaking Point.

In Fulgrim's case, any failures he blames completely on himself. Where Perty lashes out, Fulgrim turns inward.

Until he just can't take it anymore. He decides he's going to finally be selfish. Commit fully to the pleasures and pain so he never has to remember the agony he feels, that he will Never, be good enough

Heck killing Ferrus probably cemented that feeling in him. I'm not worth anything, so why bother trying to be good. Why not just be the absolute Worst.

Heavy stuff. But this leads me to my main musing.

In 40k the sins of the father very much affect the sons.

So my proposition is...you think other space marines are clingy? They hold not a Candle to an Emperor's Child. Especially one post heresy.

If you show an EC that they can be open, vulnerable, Imperfect, around you, and you don't immediately turn tail and run from the baggage, You Will Never Escape.

They don't just crave intimacy, they crave stability, affection, LOVE.

And if you give them any indication you'll supply it, they will Never let themselves be cut off.

So We're ... Friends part 1 of my 7 parter novel length FrostIron series. Unsurprising that it's number 1 in kudos as well xD in which Tony and Loki go from enemies to friends & allies. I'm a little unsure by now how I feel about parts of the series but this one is one of my favourites

You Home, Merlin? part 2 of the above :) shorter, a little fluffy, a little silly. Tony and Loki being friends and growing closer

Wanna Be More Than Friends? Cause I Really, Really Do keeping with the theme, part 3 of the above. In which Tony and Loki go from friends to lovers. I'd probably recommend this part right along the first one. Mostly fluff, a good shot of angst, then more of the fluff to round it out xD

open arms the outlier in this list. It's part 2 of my other (pride themed) frostiron series: an au in which Odin put a spell on Loki to hide his Jotun features and it caused him increasing physical discomfort throughout his life. This part is set after Loki got rid of the glamour and can finally breathe, so to say. He slowly settles into his new circumstances living in the tower, dealing with his newly uncovered identity & glamour free body, makes friends (the Avengers), has fun and is just... happy. At last. God why can't he just be happy in canon like once no I'm not salty at all what do you mean xD

I've Waited Forever To Spend Eternity With You part 5 of the first series. In which Loki and Tony go from lovers to engaged :D pining, feels, angst, fluff. This is one of the above mentioned where I'm a little unsure how to feel about them. Still very fond of it though. This series kind of made me a frostiron writer (and writer in general) and for that alone I adore it

4. What fandoms do you write for?

Almost exclusively MCU (as in Frostiron), but I've written one little fic in the Zelda (botw/totk) fandom with another one lurking in the depths of my brain, and there's one Johnlock fic I'm planning on writing. No idea when I'll get to that though xD

5. Do you respond to comments?

Yup, always :) though it does sometimes take me a little while haha

6. Fic with the angstiest ending?

tears of the knight it's the Zelda fic I mentioned above, and it's almost MCD if you don't know how the game ends. Lots of devotion. Lots of pining. Tears. Poor Link :'(

7. Fic with the happiest ending?

Of the first frostiron series above, part 3 and 5 end with absolute fluff shots, and the actual end of the series (part 7) is a worthy contender as well. Though there's actually another fic I'd like to put forth more than that, as the happiness in it is a little different in kind and particularly dear to me: of playful yowls and rumbling purrs is a were creature AU, and Loki is a lynx. Cats love warmth and napping (as we all know), and Loki loves Tony (as we all know *cough* that depends I guess but in this fic he very much does xD), and it ends with Loki nodding off in a sleepy, fuzzy state of love and warmth. Just so soft and domestic and cozily cuddled. (I frickin nailed that ending (•‾⌣‾•) xDD)

8. Do you get hate?

Not once. *knocks on wood* xD

I think a big part of that is my fandom. MCU isn't exactly new, and I wasn't around for any major disputes or drama. I think the ones that have stuck around and are still reading FrostIron 12 years after the one time they met in canon (lol) are not quite as likely to get all passionate and up in an author's face about sth they might have disliked or whatever. Adding onto that, I'm also not very critical of particular characters in my fics (and if I am, at least not in a way one might see as bashing... I think), and I don't write about any particularly out there stuff, so it's no wonder the reception has been friendly haha

9. Do you write smut?

Very rarely. Likely couldn't/wouldn't write it just for the sake of it (though I do frequently enjoy it for the sake of it lmao). Emotional development is what I'm here for most of all, and if a sex scene illustrates/shows it best, then sign me the fuck up. As of now, I've written two, but there's one fic circulating in my brain that'll add a couple more haha :D

10. Have you ever co-written a fic?

Nope. Not sure I'd be able to, or even want to. On any kind of team task, I oftentimes slide into a mindset of "let's just be polite and civil and cooperate and compromise and then we can finish and go home" but I'm not looking to have that kind of experience in writing. Sure, sometimes there's a thing and you'd be well-served to put away some of your personality and the stuff that makes you you in order to get that thing done cordially as well as efficiently. But making writing that thing? Nah. That's mine. Maybe someday I'll be able to view it differently but for now, I can't imagine seeking out cooperation, nor compromise xD

11. All time favourite ship?

It feels a little weird not to say FrostIron given I write them and they're on my brain daily. That said, it's likely Johnlock. Sherlock Holmes and John Watson are just such a classic pair. I'm most fond of their BBC Sherlock iterations (s1 and s2 only though lol... actually, no. only s1... and maybe like part of season tw— anyway) but they're rather lovely in most versions I reckon

12. WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

None :D there's a good number lurking but I think I'll get to them in time. And if not, well. Can't speak for future me, but chances are if I don't want to write sth (anymore), I also won't want to finish it (anymore) given my detachment/devaluation mechanisms. But again, who's to say

13. Writing strengths?

Fluff and humour. The fuzz. Fluff powers my soul, and I'm fairly sure it shows in my writing xD

Dialogue, or: What The Fuck Do People Say.

Of course practice helps and I've gotten much better at making my main blorbos speak to each other but when there's others involved? Parents in law? Business associates? Some fancy schmancy at a gala? In these cases there's something I sorely lack, and it's a frickin clue xDD

Also, environment descriptions. 1. I am not good at them. 2. I'm not really interested in them. and I feel like those two kind of exacerbate each other lmao

Dear Hoteliers,

Before we begin, there is one thing I’d like to address: why did I kill Alastor?

Alastor’s death, believe it or not, was not about Alastor.

While you were dying, your thoughts were not fixated on him, nor were they fixated on Mary Marie if you read that alternate ending. They were about the abuse you experienced as an Angel of God. After all, this story, the very first thing that brought you to the Hotel was revenge.

But this was not a story about revenge. That all changed in Chapter 14 “Picking a Fight,” when you and Alastor finally caved and gave in to your feelings for each other.

No longer was your Endgame plan clear cut. Things got complicated. Alastor had to accept you and the plan or it didn’t work. Why? Because, again, you thought your story was one of revenge.

Alastor’s death - the demon saving you, looking after you over the years he was “dead,” and the lengths you went to revive him - changed that narrative. Because now it was not about Alastor accepting you and the Endgame plan, but you realizing that your story could not go on without him.

Literally, hence the time jump.

I did this for your character development, closure of your character’s arc, and because it has been the theme from the beginning of this work: power born from love is a thousand times more powerful than that born from fear.

Hence, the power, chaos, and love modified mantra I ended with.

So, if love was the solution/closure you needed why were you so fixated on the abuse as you died? Why did you not find resolution in those final moments (hence the “your fault” present during this scene)? Why was there no healing from your triggering past during this fic?

I intentionally did not want that sub-plot to find an ending because that’s not how trauma works. It’s an ongoing process - a battle to fight everyday. We have our good days and our bad, and we do not let it dictate our lives, but it’s a battle nonetheless.

I’ve always taken issue with movies and books romanticizing trauma and a character becoming empowered from it, using it as willpower to take down kingdoms literally and metaphorically. Culture wraps up trauma in a nice pretty bow and sticks it on a shelf and calls it a day when, in reality, that’s not how healing works.

It is a battle. An ongoing battle many of us spend our entire lives fighting.

How fitting that Mikaela’s a soldier…

But I’m not here to rehash this subplot. I’ve said my peace for you all to synthesize on your own because I find writers have many hidden motives we don’t catch while reading, and, as a writer myself, it makes me incredibly sad when a reader misses it because the story is SO much better if you understand them.

That being said, I’m here to reflect. After all, it’s what an “Afterword” is for.

I’ve never written a fanfic before but I am a fantasy writer. I decided to use this piece to explore romance, smut, and to fantasize about Alastor because how can you not? Vivienne inadvertently dropped us a hottie who has taken the fandom by storm!

I started this piece off as an “eventual smut” piece. Trying to practice my writing in a way the great Alastor Fictive writers on here would be proud to read: @minkdelovely , @hazelfoureyes , @hurthermore , @krahk , @fraugwinska , @macabr3-barbi3 (seriously go read their stuff, it’s AMAZING). Yet, around Chapter 14 (I call it the “Golden Chapter” in my head because I consider it to be the climax of not only the fanfic but of my writing as a whole. I’m quite proud of that chapter and honestly spent a long time debating ending the story there, but so many things were still unfinished) I found that I didn’t particularly have a talent for writing smut, nor did I enjoy it in the same way I enjoy writing fantasy.

This entire project was a discovery and a challenge for myself, and I grew A LOT as a writer.

Looking back, if I had to do this again, I would change quite a bit after Chapter 14. Maybe I will in the future, but as of right now, I have school and another manuscript to complete.

That being said, I have fallen in love with Mikaela and plan on using her in the future for my own book. (I will obviously not use any of Vivienne’s stuff because copyright laws exist, but I just love the character’s personality.)

I’m not planning on writing more on Tumblr anytime soon, but the series will stay up for future readers to find and enjoy.

My only goal with this was to reach a few people and have one person - just one - say they liked my writing. :)

late night, new hope

It’s truly amazing how different the same activity can be depending on one’s companions. 

Running with the pages was punishment, running on her own or with Third Company was peaceful. Jousting against conservatives was monotonous at best, while jousting against Lord Wyldon or Raoul was challenging in a way that made Kel better, made her want to work harder.

Kissing was the same. Upon reflection, kissing Cleon had been…fine. It wasn’t earth-shattering or heated or anything she had been told it would be. It had been pleasant, Kel supposed. A decent, if slightly strange way to pass the time with someone she would have been training with instead. She hadn’t been upset when he’d gotten engaged; more of a setting aside the memories as academically interesting but not worth fretting over.

Kissing Dom couldn’t be more different.

He kisses with his whole body, coaxes Kel’s body to heat and react and move in ways she definitely never learned while training to be a knight. He makes her desperate for his hands on her body in a way that never happened before they managed to confess their feelings for each other after Raoul’s wedding. Despite them being the same height, he has this way of surrounding her that makes her feel at once trapped and completely safe. He can get her blood pumping from across the mess with a single look. And somehow, kissing, and more, with Dom is just like every other activity with Dom—fun.

“Gods—” Kel pants, letting her head tip back against the wall as Dom moves his mouth to her neck. “That feels good. You feel good,” she emphasizes, rolling her hips to press her center against where he’s hard in his breeches. She grins to herself in triumph and then shivers in delight when the contact makes him groan against her throat and nip the delicate skin there. His hands are warm against her skin where she’s shed her top layers save her breastband and all she wants to do is be closer.

“The feeling’s mutual, sweetheart,” Dom murmurs between kisses to her clavicle. “Though I suspect the gods have better things to do than watch us right now.”

“I’d certainly hope so,” Kel laughs as she rucks up Dom’s tunic to get her hands on his skin in turn. “I did have a completely irreverent prayer to them this evening though.”

Dom’s hands drag slowly, deliberately, up her waist to cup her breasts. Even through the breastband Kel swears she can feel each swirl of his fingerprint on her skin like a brand. 

“Mmm? What was it?”

“Just—ah—fervent thanks for Tobe being at Steadfast this week.” Her breastband falls to the floor and Dom’s skilled fingers turn to drawing lazy circles around them, slowly spiraling in, always skirting where she wants to feel him.

Dom snorts a laugh into the valley between her breasts, which should be mildly offputting, but Kel just grins, pleased she can still joke with him like she did riding with the Own even in this context. At the core of everything, they’re friends—without that foundation, nothing deeper could have ever followed. And should the friendship deteriorate under the weight of all these extra feelings, Kel knows the rest would come crashing down around their heads.

“Remind me to offer my own thanks for that later,” he says grinning at her, still avoiding her nipples as he teases her. “I should probably add my own thanks to the gods for your clerks, and their superb scheduling that secured you an entire evening and morning off duty while I’m actually in the same place as you for once.”

“I still have to be available in an emergency, Dom.” He still won’t touch her like she wants him to.

“I know.”

“So maybe,” she says, pushing her hips forward again and letting her hands roam lower, “you should get on with it before that happens.”

“As you wish, my lady,” Dom drawls, eyes dark as he clocks Kel’s reaction to the title. He’s called her that in jest, in public, with the rest of his squad and Third Company around them—just another nickname to go with ‘Mother.’ It was funny then, Kel as unconcerned with titles and formality as Raoul was. But here, in her firelight rooms, bare to her hips as he kisses and touches and teases her, it’s the farthest thing from humorous. It hits a place inside her that makes her want to move Dom’s hands herself, makes her want to push this moment further, makes her want to direct their steps, makes her want to lead their dance, makes her want to command.

Her throat goes dry as they stare at each other, caught in the tangle Dom’s words produced. But she doesn’t feel like it’s a bad thing, in fact, she thinks the idea of her being in charge like this simply hadn’t occurred to him until this moment—but he’s thinking about it now, and enjoying the idea if the steadily growing hardness pressing against her thigh is any indication. Gathering her courage she rasps out, “Touch me.”

It’s not a question.

Dom swallows heavily, pupils blown wide with arousal, and obeys.
